April 27-May 3

While last week we saw a heat spell in Santa Cruz, this week began with a cold spell. Domingo repeated, “No quiere crecer,” which translates to, “The plant does not want to grow.” We know that our plants will continue to grow but that cold weather also presents a challenge to our food crops.

On Wednesday, a man shanked the spines of Don Emilio’s nopales. This must be done before the nopales are cooked. I also think we might have enough local organic squash to fulfill all of Santa Cruz’s local organic needs. I keep in mind though, while you can predict a harvest one never knows what one’s going to get until one harvests.
